Punish inaction, not failure

I enjoy volunteering in the local Scout Troop as a Crew Advisor to the young men. That being said, I am not so hardcore that I wear a uniform at every meeting, nor am I so lax that I like to push over rock formations in Goblin Valley just for kicks and giggles. I simply remember all the valuable life lessons I learned in Scouts and wanted to pay it forward by interacting with the local youth, encouraging them to develop responsibility and successful adult traits.

Yet one concerning theme I keep coming across in my interactions with these youth is something I call “Choice-averse” behavior. This goes well beyond the more commonly understood risk-averse nature some people tend to carry. These choice-averse natures don’t even play the game for fear of failure. It’s almost as if general expectations for youth have diminished to the point where society incentivizes inaction over pursuing any sort of serious challenge. Violin Music Video Cover – Backwards by Matthias

So I’ve been working on this during my vacation time from work. It’s been good to finally play the violin again for a fun project like this. Matthias is a relatively popular Youtuber who created this music video for an online reality TV show called Internet Icon (Season 2). This was the final challenge to determine the winner of the show, and I was really impressed by what an amazing song and video he was able to create in such a short amount of time. It inspired me to push the boundaries of where I’ve gone before in music, singing, and video.

Singing with the Men’s Chorus

I know it has been forever since I last posted anything of note, but hopefully I can make up for it with exciting new posts over the next few weeks. There is something extremely powerful about the music of the human voice. Though I never had any formal training in singing, my exposure to church choir along with studying the violin since I was six resulted gave me confidence in any sort of vocal endeavors.

This past weekend, I was able to participate in a Stake Conference, singing the 1st tenor part in the Men’s Chorus for an intermediate hymn and the closing song. While these are raw recordings, I really enjoyed the a cappella introduction to God Be With You ‘Til We Meet Again. Great music with inspirational speakers made for a good  weekend overall. Enjoy!

Never give up; always go right

When life comes at you again and again, you may feel like giving up from time to time. Encountering obstacles on the path to any major goal is a given, and overwhelming feelings of inadequacy, difficulty, and despair can cripple you to a state of inaction. From one’s personal to professional life, inaction is the certain path to failure. Only by persistence, faith, and diligence do we ever have a hope of success. Continue reading
