Meaningful Mentions from LDS General Conference

For those of you who might have missed it, last weekend the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held its bi-annual General Conference. The weekend consisted of five 2-hour long sessions from various leaders in the organization speaking on a variety of moral topics relevant to our time. An Android App for the Talker/World Traveler

With all the downsides I hear about Skype, I am surprised little attention has been given to a very competitive alternative in Google Voice. With a free phone number, free voicemail dictation service, and free calling to and from numbers throughout the U.S. and Canada, people really should start taking advantage of this service. The audio and video call reliability is stronger than Skype, and you can use the service directly from G-mail! Extending on that service, GrooVe IP is an Android app that lets you harness the power of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) to make dirt cheap calls from anywhere in the world.

On Metrics and Goal-setting

Setting targets and goals for achievement in work and personal life is all well and good. They are, in fact, a useful method to quantify in some degree your effectiveness. However, there is a slippery slope of using metrics as a crutch. In my limited experience in the workforce, I have personally seen the power of metrics completely dictate the actions of employees. This works in conjunction with the desire to follow the path of least resistance (in an effort remain effective, of course?) to sometimes create unusual or undesired dynamics. Continue reading
